Gene - The John Peel Sessions (2006)

I have no comment other than to say that John Peel seldom steered us wrong and Gene deserved the kind of success and recognition which was afforded to the likes of Oasis and Blur. Ah well. This is not a perfect world. Nor is it a dainty world to set before the swine.

A Few Songs from Indie Guitar-Pop Band Dot Dash

One of the benefits of having a popular music blog is that occasionally people send you stuff ... for free!  I get promotional materials all the time from bands, both established and up-and-coming, including mp3s and press releases.  Most of the time the bands in question are utter shite, but sometimes, rarely ... they're not.

Washington, DC-based band Dot Dash - which features former members of Julie Ocean, The Saturday People, Swervedriver, etc - sent me a few samples of their tasty brand of melodic guitar-pop.  Shall I compare them to other indie bands of yore?  Hmm.  Well, there was something of the Undertones in there, a bit of, say, the Lemonheads, something akin to the C86 cassette sound, and something like a more manic Ocean Blue.  I dunno.  I liked it.  You decide for yourself and tell me what you think.

Check this stream of their song "Shouting in the Rain" and you'll see what I mean.

And here's a video of their song, "The Past Is Another Country."

Dot Dash's new album, Winter Garden Light, is available here.

The Cranberries - Uncertain EP (1991)

Previous Cranberries discography post has been removed, as readers have reported the links were not working. Sorry about that. If anybody has working links, feel free to share. In the meantime, here's a little something to tide you over.

I have fond memories of driving around listening to Everybody Else Is Doing It on a cassette copy with The Church's Starfish on the flipside. You may think that these two albums would be fairly disconnected, being separated by a decade of musical evolution and such, but actually they work really well together and make for a solid jangle-pop dreamscape soundtrack.  As such, these two albums are permanently intertwined in my mind, and whenever I hear one I start longing to listen to the other. I don't know about you, but "Pretty" was my favorite song off that debut Cranberries album. Not sure why, but it appealed to me as a sweet, simple melody coupled with a nice prominent bassline that always felt like a Head on the Door-era Cure B-side. Okay, that's enough of my free-associating, but feel free to share your own Cranberry memories.

1. Uncertain
2. Nothing Left At All
3. Pathetic Senses
4. Them
